We have a real cutie this time
From the Italian stable FIAT. The classic 500. In absolutely pristine condition. And in racing green.
The Fiat 500 or Cinquecento was hailed as one of the first city cars in fact it was reputed as the car that brought a whole new meaning to the term “city car”.
Which is in no way surprising as the original models were very cheap to produce, were powered by a 497cc air cooled engine and the body only measured a mere 2.97m in length. It was tiny and as such ideal for city life and commuting.
Produced by Fiat from 1957 to 1975 the 500 was always destined to be a very practical and affordable car. The post war market demanded economy cars and in 1949 saw the arrival of the front engined Fiat 500. Starting life as a two door coupe with a sunroof it would later be remodelled into an estate. Both versions continued until 1954 when they were replaced by a newer and lighter model that had rear mounted engine like the VW Beetle and the 1955 Fiat 600.
The Fiat 500 was to prove to be a very popular car throughout Europe and production continued until 1975 and was replaced by the Fiat 126 which was introduced two years before but which never reached the same popularity of the classic 500.
Lesson to be learned: size matters and small is beautiful!
